Description

This was a cartoon created by Richmond Whig and featured in the publication Harper's Weekly, which would go on to use the image on multiple occasions, the first one in 1868 and then once again in the year 1872. The cartoon itself showed an African American man that was lying dead on the ground with his finger pointing towards his head as if to point out the blood that was coming out of his head. Then on a crate in the background there was the phrase "Negro Killed" etched. in a simple statement, this cartoon showed the scene of a murdered African American. in the year of 1868, when the cartoon was first published, there were disturbances in the south due to the fact the African Americans had finally been able to vote. In short, this particular cartoon showed what some of the outcomes of said disturbances from white former confederates were.
